Mikumi Day Safari from Zanzibar — Fly In, Game Drive, Fly Back

Zanzibar has almost everything except animals. The island is spice farms, reef and Stone Town; the elephants and lions people picture when they say “Tanzania” are on the mainland, and the famous parks — Serengeti, Ngorongoro — are a flight and several days away in the north. Mikumi is the answer to that problem. It sits roughly 300 kilometres inland from the coast, and a light aircraft covers the gap in well under an hour. That single fact is what makes a genuine safari day possible without checking out of your hotel.

Why Mikumi works as a one-day park

Mikumi National Park covers 3,230 square kilometres and was gazetted in 1964, making it Tanzania’s fourth-largest national park. Its game-viewing heart is the Mkata floodplain — open grassland dotted with acacia and borassus palms, so often compared to the southern Serengeti that guides use the phrase without irony.

That openness is the whole argument. In a dense bush park, six hours of driving can easily produce nothing but tracks and birdsong. On the Mkata plain you see across kilometres of grass, and the animals that live there are large and unbothered: elephant families, Masai giraffe, plains zebra, impala in their hundreds, buffalo, warthog, baboon, and hippo wallowing in the permanent pools. Sightings that need luck elsewhere are close to routine here.

Lion are present and frequently seen, and leopard are in the park — one of our featured operators has photographs of both. But they are not the point of a day trip, and any listing that promises big cats is overselling. Mikumi has four of the Big Five. Rhino were poached out in the 1990s and have not been reliably seen since, though TANAPA has plans to reintroduce black rhino from elsewhere. Treat lion as an excellent possibility and rhino as absent, and the day will meet your expectations rather than fight them.

The park’s other quiet strength is birds. More than 400 species are recorded, resident and migratory, and between December and February northern migrants arrive in numbers. If you care about birds, that is the season the guides get excited about.

What the day actually looks like

Every fly-in operator runs a broadly similar shape. A driver collects you before dawn — earlier if you are on the north or east coast, later from Stone Town — and takes you to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport. The morning flight leaves somewhere between 07:00 and 07:45 and lands on a bush airstrip inside the park. Your driver-guide and 4x4 are waiting where the plane stops, and the game drive starts immediately, usually around 08:30.

You drive through the morning, break for a bush lunch near midday, and drive again through the early afternoon. The return flight leaves the airstrip around 15:00, and you are back at your hotel between roughly 17:00 and 18:30. Door to door, allow twelve hours.

What varies between listings is worth reading carefully, because it is where the price differences live: whether you fly on a single- or twin-engine aircraft, whether the game-drive vehicle is a closed 4x4 with a pop-top or fully open-sided, how many people share it, whether lunch is a buffet or a picnic box, and how long the drive actually runs. The longest day visit we list keeps you in the park until 15:30 or later; the shortest has you heading for the airstrip at 14:30. What it costs, and what “included” means

Fly-in day safaris from Zanzibar start around $430 per person and run to roughly $600 depending on aircraft, group size and vehicle. That is a lot for one day, and it is worth understanding why: you are paying for two flight sectors, a national park fee, a 4x4 with a professional guide for a full day, and lunch.

Tanzania National Parks currently charges non-resident adults $30 per day to enter Mikumi and children $10, under the tariff running to 30 June 2026. On every listing on this site, those fees, the airstrip landing fees and the bush lunch are already in the ticket price — you should not be asked for cash at the gate. When to go, and when not to

Late June to October is the dry season and the best general game-viewing window. Water sources shrink, grass thins on the Mkata plain, and animals concentrate around the remaining pools and the Mkata River — September and October are the strongest months for large herds at water. Temperatures sit in a comfortable range through this period.

November to May brings rain, greener country and taller grass, which makes spotting harder but the landscape far more photogenic, and December to February is the peak for birdwatching — our month-by-month timing guide works through each of them. One practical warning from the operators themselves: between 1 April and 1 June, weather and airfield conditions can force changes to the itinerary or the aircraft. If your trip falls in that window, build in flexibility and do not book your Mikumi day for the day before an international flight home. Whatever the season, the packing list barely changes.

If a day is not enough

It sometimes isn’t. A fly-in day gives you around six hours in the park; a three-day overland trip by fast ferry and SGR train gives you a full day of game drives, two nights in a lodge and, on most itineraries, a Maasai village visit — for roughly the price of the more expensive day trips.
