Mikumi from Dar es Salaam by SGR Train, or Fly from Zanzibar?
How to reach Mikumi from Dar es Salaam on the SGR electric train and road, what it costs in 2026, how it compares with flying from Zanzibar, and how to plan around Christmas and New Year.

Yes, you can do Mikumi as a day trip from Dar es Salaam. Take the 06:00 SGR express to Morogoro (arriving about 07:40), drive about two hours to the park, game-drive for 4½ to 5½ hours and catch an evening train back, home by about 22:00 to 23:00. If you can spare a night, the two-day version by train is the better trip; if you are based on Zanzibar, fly instead.
Check Availability
The figures that matter, checked in October and November 2026:
- Train fare: standard class from about TZS 13,000 each way (LATRA’s 2024 fare; TRC quoted TZS 13,500 in October 2026). Children aged 4 to 12 pay half; under-4s ride free. Check the live fare on TRC’s booking site.
- Packaged day trips from Dar: operators selling direct list shared SGR day trips from about $250 to $330 per person and private ones from about $440 each for two. The most-reviewed listing on GetYourGuide costs from $430.
- Fly-in day trips from Zanzibar: from $430 on GetYourGuide and $500 on Viator.
- Our picks: Dar residents, take the train and stay a night. Zanzibar visitors, fly: ferry plus train is a false economy on a day trip.
- Christmas and New Year: book train seats and tours as early as you can, never rely on the last train the day before an international flight, and expect short-rains showers.
How do you get from Dar es Salaam to Mikumi National Park?
You have four realistic ways from Dar: the SGR train to Morogoro plus a road transfer (fastest and most comfortable), driving the whole way (cheapest for groups, but slowest), a bus (cheapest of all, with no game drive), or a light-aircraft flight. Mikumi lies about 283–312 km west of Dar es Salaam, depending on where you measure from, on the Tanzania–Zambia (TanZam) highway, which runs straight through the park. That is why Mikumi is so easy to reach, and why you share the road with long-distance trucks.
| Route | Distance | Typical time (one way) |
|---|---|---|
| Dar (Magufuli SGR station) → Morogoro by SGR | 192 km of rail | 1 h 40 (express) to about 1 h 50 (ordinary) |
| Morogoro → Mikumi main gate by road | About 100–118 km | About 2 hours |
| Dar → Mikumi by road the whole way | About 283–312 km | 4–6 hours; longer leaving Dar on a Friday or a holiday eve |
| Dar → Morogoro by road only | About 194 km | 3½–4½ hours in real traffic |
| Light aircraft from Dar or Zanzibar → Mikumi airstrip | — | Under 1 hour to about 1 h 20, depending on routing |
Is there a train directly to Mikumi? No. After Morogoro the SGR continues to Mkata and Kilosa before climbing to Dodoma. Kilosa looks closer on a map, but it lies north of the park, has no established safari transfers, and none of the operators we checked use it. Morogoro is the station for Mikumi.
What is the SGR, and how does the Dar es Salaam–Morogoro train work?
The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) is Tanzania’s electric intercity line, run by Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC). It opened to paying passengers between Dar es Salaam and Morogoro on 14 June 2024 and is now the quickest way to the start of the Mikumi road. Passenger trains reached Dodoma in late July 2024 and were formally inaugurated in August 2024. On the opening day the first train left Dar at 06:10 and reached Morogoro at 07:56. An express service that skips the intermediate stations began on 5 July 2024.
The line is busy. TRC told Mwananchi in October 2026 that daily ridership had risen from 9,000–10,000 passengers to 12,000–13,000 after extra trips were added. On 2 October 2026 Deputy Transport Minister David Kihenzile put the recent average at about 9,300 a day, with roughly 5.5 million passengers carried between June 2024 and March 2026 (as reported by Rio Times). Government spokesperson Gerson Msigwa, quoted by Daily News, said the SGR had carried more than seven million passengers since July 2024 and announced extra trips from 1 September 2026. Popular trains sell out: in January 2026 TRC Director General Machibya Masanja told The Citizen that “demand is very high”, and TRC began coupling two EMU trains to carry 1,160 passengers per trip.
Stations between Dar and Morogoro: Dar es Salaam (Magufuli station), Pugu, Soga, Ruvu, Ngerengere and Morogoro. Express trains run non-stop to Morogoro.
What is the SGR timetable from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro?
The train for a Mikumi day trip is the 06:00 express from Dar, which reaches Morogoro at 07:40. The timetable changed several times in 2026, so use the times below to plan and confirm them on the TRC booking site.
Dar es Salaam → Morogoro (latest fully published timetable, from 3 January 2026)
| Departs Dar | Arrives Morogoro | Train | Useful for Mikumi? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 06:00 | 07:40 | Express (continues to Dodoma) | Yes: the day-trip train |
| 08:00 | 09:25 | EMU “Mchongoko” (Business and Royal) | Fine for a two-day trip |
| 09:30 | 11:15 | Ordinary | A relaxed start to a two-day trip |
| 16:00 | About 17:45 | Ordinary (Dar–Morogoro shuttle) | Overnight in Morogoro, park next morning |
| 18:55 | About 20:25 | Ordinary | Overnight in Morogoro only |
Morogoro → Dar es Salaam (as reported by Mwananchi, 4 October 2026)
| Departs Morogoro | Train | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 09:32 | EMU “Mchongoko”, Business and Royal only | Comes from Dodoma; replaced the cheap morning ordinary train |
| 14:10 | Ordinary | Too early for a day trip |
| 16:25 | Ordinary | Possible only on a two-day trip |
| 19:25 | Train from Dodoma | A realistic day-trip return |
| 20:30 | Express | The latest option; reaches Dar about 22:10 |
Things to watch:
- TRC announced extra trips from 1 September 2026 and published a revised Dar–Morogoro timetable in April 2026, but we could not find a complete October 2026 list of departures from Dar. The 06:00 express has run since July 2024 and anchors every day-trip listing we checked.
- Some tour listings still describe a 19:18 return train reaching Dar around 21:05, while the October 2026 report lists 19:25 and 20:30. Operators adjust to whatever TRC runs, but times do move.
- Tanzanians often quote times in Swahili time, six hours behind the 24-hour clock: saa 1 usiku means 19:00, not 01:00. Booking sites use the 24-hour clock.
How much is the SGR ticket from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro?
Standard (ordinary) class is TZS 13,000 under LATRA’s 2024 fare order, and TRC quoted TZS 13,500 for Morogoro–Dar in October 2026. Business class on the ordinary train was TZS 30,500, and the premium Mchongoko EMU charges TZS 50,500 (Business) or TZS 63,500 (Royal). Either standard fare is roughly $5.
| Class or service | Dar ↔ Morogoro adult fare | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Standard / ordinary | TZS 13,000 | LATRA fare order, June 2024 |
| Ordinary (recent quote) | TZS 13,500 | TRC to Mwananchi, 4 October 2026 |
| Business on the ordinary train | TZS 30,500 | Mwananchi, 4 October 2026 (the previous morning service) |
| Mchongoko EMU, Business | TZS 50,500 | Mwananchi, 4 October 2026 |
| Mchongoko EMU, Royal | TZS 63,500 | Mwananchi, 4 October 2026 |
| Children 4–12 | Half the adult fare (TZS 6,500 at launch) | LATRA, June 2024 |
| Under 4 | Free (still registered on the booking) | LATRA, June 2024 |
We could not find a newer official fare order than LATRA’s 2024 one, so budget TZS 13,000 to 13,500 and check the price shown on the booking site. Some websites still quote 2024 Dodoma express fares (TZS 70,000, 100,000 and 120,000); those are for the full Dar–Dodoma run, not Morogoro.
Other LATRA standard fares from Dar (2024): Ruvu TZS 5,000, Ngerengere TZS 9,000, Mkata TZS 16,000, Kilosa TZS 18,000, Dodoma TZS 31,000.
Which class should you book? For a 1 h 40 ride, standard class is fine: air-conditioned, clean and fast. Book Business if you carry camera gear (see the luggage rules below), travel on a peak holiday day, or want a calmer carriage for an early start.
How do you book SGR tickets as a foreigner?
Book online on TRC’s official SGR ticketing site (sgrticket.trc.co.tz) with your passport number, and pay with the government control number (GePG) by mobile money or bank card, or buy at the ticket windows inside the stations. On a packaged day trip the operator buys the tickets; you send everyone’s full names exactly as they appear in their passports.
How to book
- Go to the official TRC SGR ticketing site and create an account with your email or mobile number.
- Choose one way or return, Dar es Salaam (Magufuli) → Morogoro, then the date and the train.
- Enter each passenger’s full name, adult or child, passport number and non-resident status, plus an email and phone number.
- Select class and seats, then request a control number.
- Pay before the control number expires, by mobile money (M-Pesa, Mixx by Yas, Airtel Money and similar) or another option shown at checkout.
- Save the e-ticket (PDF or SMS) and carry the same passport you booked with.
Tips for foreign visitors
- Card payment can be hit-and-miss. Some guides describe paying by card, but the official flow centres on GePG and mobile money. A local SIM with mobile money solves it, or ask your hotel or operator to book.
- Arrive early. TRC has advised buying online or at station windows and arriving well ahead, suggesting two hours before departure to avoid queues. For the 06:00 train, be inside the station by about 05:15.
- Food: at launch TRC said passengers could not bring food on board and that food would be sold at stations. Carry water and eat a snack before boarding.
- Luggage: Business and Royal passengers were allowed 20 kg and 30 kg free at launch, and everyone goes through airport-style security screening. A day pack and a camera bag are no problem.
Getting to Magufuli SGR station in Dar traffic
Magufuli station stands next to the old Central Line station on the edge of the city centre. At 05:00 the roads are empty: allow 15 to 30 minutes from Masaki, Oyster Bay or Mikocheni by Bolt or Uber. Evenings are different. If you are catching the 16:00 train, or heading home after a 22:00 arrival on a holiday weekend, book a ride-hail and wait for it inside the station instead of taking a taxi from the forecourt. Coming off the Zanzibar ferry, the terminal on Sokoine Drive is a short drive from the station.
How long is the drive from Morogoro to Mikumi?
Allow about two hours for the roughly 100–118 km from Morogoro station to Mikumi’s main gate on the TanZam highway. The road is tarmac all the way but is a busy freight corridor, with speed humps and police checks through villages and lower speed limits through the park, where elephants and giraffes often cross. Day-trip operators meet you at Morogoro SGR station, usually stop for breakfast in town, then drive straight to the gate.
December warning: the Tanzania Meteorological Authority warned of heavy rain for 26–29 December 2025, and a Ministry of Transport statement on 28 December, reported by The Citizen, described landslides and mud on the Morogoro–Iringa highway, “particularly on the stretch between Mama Marashi and Mikumi”. That is the transfer route. It rarely closes the road for long, but it is the main reason we don’t recommend a tight same-day trip on a stormy holiday weekend.
Can you drive yourself from Dar to Mikumi?
Yes. The highway is fully paved and self-drive is straightforward in Mikumi, but allow 4½ to 6 hours each way and leave Dar before 05:30.
- Leaving Dar is the slow part. The Morogoro Road out through Ubungo and Kibaha to Chalinze is where the hours go, especially on 23–24 December and 1–2 January.
- The gate is cashless. TANAPA takes Visa or Mastercard, or a GePG control number paid by mobile money; cash is not accepted.
- Vehicle fees: a self-drive rental firm reports TANAPA fees for Tanzanian-registered cars of about TZS 23,600 (small SUV) to TZS 41,300 (Land Cruiser) a day including VAT. Figures for foreign-registered vehicles vary widely across secondary sources ($10 to $40–50), so confirm at the gate.
- A 4x4 or high-clearance car is strongly recommended in December and January, when the black-cotton soil of the Mkata floodplain turns slick after rain.
- The highway through the park is not a game drive. To use the game-viewing tracks you must enter at the gate and pay.
- Don’t drive the TanZam at night. Trucks, unlit vehicles and wildlife make it the riskiest part of the trip.
Is there a bus from Dar es Salaam to Mikumi?
Yes. Long-distance buses from Dar’s Magufuli bus terminal at Mbezi to Iringa, Mbeya and Songea run along the TanZam highway through Mikumi town, but a bus gets you only to town, not onto a game drive. It works if you have booked a lodge or guesthouse in Mikumi town that runs its own drives; see where to stay overnight in Mikumi. When the SGR launched, buses on the Dar–Morogoro road charged about TZS 13,000, the same as the train, which is why most people now take the train to Morogoro. The bus suits backpackers on a two- or three-day trip, not a day trip.
Is a same-day SGR day trip to Mikumi realistic?
Yes. It is long but doable, with about 4½ to 5½ hours inside the park. There is no slack: one late train or a muddy highway and you lose game-drive time or miss the last train back. It suits people with a single free day who can face a 04:45 start and getting home around 22:00 to 23:00.
The most-reviewed version on GetYourGuide is Dar es Salaam: One-Day Wildlife Safari in Mikumi National Park, from $430 per person and rated 4.8 out of 5 from 25 reviews; travellers describe train tickets arranged over WhatsApp and transfers to and from the station.
Sample timeline: SGR day trip from Dar es Salaam
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 04:45 | Pickup from your hotel or home in Dar (Bolt if travelling independently) |
| 05:15 | Security screening and boarding at Magufuli station |
| 06:00 | Express departs Dar |
| 07:40 | Arrive Morogoro; the driver-guide meets you; quick breakfast in town |
| 08:15–10:00 | Drive the TanZam highway to Mikumi main gate (watch for elephants once you are inside the park boundary) |
| 10:00–15:30 | Game drive on the Mkata floodplain with a picnic or lodge lunch (about 5 hours) |
| 15:30–17:30 | Drive back to Morogoro (operators usually leave the park around 16:00) |
| 19:25 or 20:30 | Evening train to Dar |
| About 21:10–22:10 | Arrive at Magufuli station; transfer home |
The evening arrival times are our estimates from the 1 h 40 to 1 h 50 running time; some listings quote a 19:18 departure arriving at 21:05. The fly-in day from Zanzibar follows a different shape; compare it in our hour-by-hour itinerary.
Why many people prefer 2 days / 1 night
For most travellers the two-day trip is better: an afternoon drive, a night in the bush and a sunrise drive, when lions are most active and the light is best.
- You can take the relaxed 09:30 ordinary train instead of the 06:00.
- You get two game drives (afternoon and early morning), roughly 7 to 9 hours of viewing in total instead of 5.
- The delay risk mostly disappears: you return on the 14:10 or 16:25, with the evening trains as a backup.
- It costs little extra. Operators selling direct on SafariBookings list private two-day train trips at a mid-range lodge from about $338 to $356 per person. On GetYourGuide, 2 magical days in Mikumi – SGR train and unforgettable safari costs from $500 for a small group of up to five; it has only two reviews so far (both 5 out of 5), so ask the operator what is included before you book.

How much does a Mikumi safari from Dar es Salaam cost?
Expect about $250 to $330 per person for a shared or group SGR day trip sold direct, $430 on GetYourGuide, $440 to $735 per person for a private one (depending on group size), and from about $340 per person for a two-day private train safari. These are “from” prices on live listings in October and November 2026. They change daily and can be discounted, so treat them as a range, not a quote.

Should you fly to Mikumi from Dar es Salaam instead?
Only if time matters more than money. Flying from Dar saves about three hours each way, but it costs several times the train fare, and departures depend on light-aircraft schedules. Safari Air Link, owned by Foxes Safari Camps, is the only airline running scheduled flights to Mikumi, on a daily southern circuit linking Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Nyerere (Selous), Mikumi and Ruaha. It uses Mikumi’s Kikoboga airstrip.
Safari Air Link does not publish a stand-alone Dar–Mikumi fare in any source we could verify. Coastal Aviation’s published schedule (valid to May 2027) lists the codeshared Safari Air Link Dar–Selous flights at 10:30 and 16:30 for $200 one way, and Mikumi is on the same network, so expect a similar or higher fare per leg, quoted on request. Flights usually operate once at least two seats are sold, and the aircraft carry a 15 kg soft-bag limit, which matters if you carry a long lens (see our green-season photography guide). More on the aircraft is in flying to Mikumi by light aircraft.
Who should fly from Dar: business travellers with one free day, people with mobility issues who want to avoid four or more hours of road, and anyone combining Mikumi with Ruaha or Nyerere (see Mikumi vs Ruaha and Mikumi vs Nyerere).
Coming from Zanzibar: ferry + train, or fly?
Fly. For a day trip from Zanzibar, the fly-in costs from $430 and gives you about six hours in the park. Ferry plus train plus road means about eight hours of travel each way, so it only makes sense as a two- or three-day trip. One independent guide that surveyed guests reported that both reviewers who took the ferry-and-road option regretted it. A listing that meets you in Dar rather than on Zanzibar may be a road trip sold as a fly-in; our page on fly-in vs Dar es Salaam routing shows how to tell.
The Azam ferry: Zanzibar ↔ Dar es Salaam
Azam Marine’s fast ferries take about 1½ to 2 hours. Azam publishes non-resident adult fares of $35 Economy, $40 Business, $60 VIP and $100 Royal (children aged 5 to 11 in Economy pay $30). Ferry guides list the usual departures as 07:00, 09:30, 12:30 and 16:00 in each direction, and Zan Fast Ferries runs extra sailings; check the timetable when you book. Azam’s booking pages state a 25 kg luggage allowance, and an online booking is confirmed only once payment is complete.
| Azam class | Non-resident adult | Resident adult |
|---|---|---|
| Economy | $35 | TZS 40,000 |
| Business | $40 | TZS 50,000 |
| VIP | $60 | TZS 80,000 |
| Royal | $100 | TZS 120,000 |
Fares from Azam Marine’s own fare page, checked 2 November 2026. Children under 5 cannot be booked online.
Practical:
- Buy only from the official Azam office or website, or a trusted agent. Touts on Sokoine Drive in Dar and around Malindi in Stone Town sell “tickets” and porter services you don’t need.
- Ferries dock at Sokoine Drive (Dar) and Malindi (Stone Town). There is no immigration on this domestic route, but carry your passport: tickets are issued in your name, and Zanzibar port staff check documents.
- Why the ferry doesn’t work for a day trip: the 07:00 ferry reaches Dar around 08:45 to 09:00, after the 06:00 express has left, so you would reach Mikumi in the early afternoon. Ferry-and-SGR packages therefore run as two- or three-day trips; the three-day ferry-and-SGR trips on GetYourGuide collect you from your Zanzibar hotel at 05:30 for the 07:00 boat. Our page on Mikumi by ferry and road from Zanzibar covers that route in full.
When ferry and SGR make sense: you are heading to Dar anyway (flying home from Dar, for example), you want the train ride as part of the trip, or you are a group of four or more on a budget doing three days. For island-based trips, see our Zanzibar itinerary planner and pickup times by area.
SGR vs road vs flying: which route is best for you?
Dar residents: take the train and stay a night. Zanzibar holidaymakers: fly. Groups of four or more on a budget: an SGR day trip or self-drive. Nobody should do ferry plus train in a single day. Our flying vs going overland page makes the same comparison from Zanzibar.
| Option | Door-to-door travel (one way) | Typical cost per person | Game-drive time | Comfort | Risk | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SGR + road from Dar (day trip) | About 4 h | $250–330 shared, sold direct; $430 on GetYourGuide; $440+ private for two | 4½–5½ h | Good | Medium: train delays, rain on the highway | Dar residents with one free day |
| SGR + road, 2 days / 1 night | About 4 h | $338–500 | 7–9 h over two drives | Very good | Low | Our pick for residents and Dar stopovers |
| Road only from Dar | 4½–6 h | From about $280 | 3–4½ h | Tiring | Medium to high: traffic, trucks, night driving | Self-drivers, groups, trips of two days or more |
| Fly-in from Dar | About 1–1½ h including the airport | High (fares on request, about $200+ per leg) | 5–7 h | Very good | Low to medium: flight minimums, 15 kg bags | Time-poor business travellers |
| Fly-in from Zanzibar (day trip) | About 2 h including transfers | $430–710 | About 6 h | Very good | Low to medium: weather and schedule changes | Our pick for Zanzibar visitors |
| Ferry + SGR from Zanzibar | About 6–8 h | $570–700 (three days) | One afternoon and one full or morning drive | Fair | Medium: two connections | Travellers ending their trip in Dar; train fans |
Verdicts
- Our pick from Dar: two days and one night by SGR, the best wildlife time for the hours spent travelling.
- Budget pick: a shared SGR day trip, or a private one split four to six ways ($250–300 per person). The independent alternative is the bus to Mikumi town plus a lodge-run drive on a two-day trip.
- When flying from Zanzibar beats the train: whenever you are based on the island with only one day, when you travel with young children or older relatives, and in late December, when rain can delay trains and muddy the highway.
- Not for anyone with an international flight from Dar that evening or the next morning who would be relying on the last train.
What are Mikumi’s park fees for tourists, residents and expats?
Non-resident adults pay $30 plus 18% VAT ($35.40) per 24 hours. Children aged 5 to 15 pay $10 plus VAT ($11.80), and under-5s are free. Expatriates with a Tanzanian residence permit are widely reported to pay half the non-resident rate, $15 plus VAT (about $17.70).
| Category | Adult | Child 5–15 | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foreign non-resident | $30 + VAT = $35.40 | $10 + VAT = $11.80 | TANAPA tariff; consistent across sources |
| Expatriate / residence-permit holder | $15 + VAT (about $17.70) | $5 + VAT | Secondary sources; carry your residence permit |
| East African Community citizen | TZS 5,000 (several sources) | TZS 2,000 | Conflicting: TANAPA’s Mikumi page shows TZS 10,000 but marks its figures as illustrative |
| Concession fee (sleeping inside the park) | $25 + VAT = $29.50 a night | $10 + VAT | Only for in-park lodges and camps |
| Night game drive | $50 + VAT = $59 | $25 + VAT | Where offered |
Notes:
- TANAPA’s Mikumi web page displays “$50 international adult”, labelled as an illustrative fee with a reminder to confirm the latest tariffs. Every operator and tariff-based source we checked still uses $30 plus VAT.
- A 2026 park-fee guide reports that TANAPA formally proposed 15% annual increases in conservation and concession fees for five years, from 2026/27 to 2030/31, covering Mikumi, Serengeti, Ruaha and Tarangire. We have not seen a gazetted tariff confirming it. If it applies, Mikumi’s fee would be about $41 including VAT; ask your operator whether the package price allows for it.
- Fees are cashless (card or GePG control number). Expats should bring the original residence permit to get the resident rate.

Two Friday-to-Sunday long weekends (25–27 December and 1–3 January) suit a two-day trip. Expect the heaviest train and road demand on 23–24 December (people heading upcountry), around 27–28 December and 1–3 January (people coming back), and on 11–12 January around Revolution Day.
Holiday risks: what happened in December 2025
- 28 December 2025: TRC’s director general confirmed that no SGR trains left Dar from the morning until midday after heavy rain caused technical faults and power cuts, stranding ticket holders at Magufuli station.
- 29 December 2025: TRC added extra trips on the Dar–Morogoro and Dar–Dodoma routes to clear the backlog.
- 31 December 2025: flood damage at Kidete (Kilosa District) and Godegode (Mpwapwa) suspended the Morogoro–Dodoma section. Dar–Morogoro kept running, and a new timetable started on 3 January 2026.
- The same rains caused landslides and mud on the highway between Mama Marashi and Mikumi.
What this means for you:
- Book train seats, or your packaged trip, as early as you can for holiday dates. Even outside the holidays, TRC has acknowledged ticket shortages.
- Don’t do a same-day trip the day before an international flight. Keep at least one spare day, ideally two nights, in Dar before flying home.
- Check TRC’s official social media and the booking site the evening before, and save your operator’s WhatsApp number.
- Choose operators with flexible rebooking. Many GetYourGuide listings offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
- See weather and free cancellation for what happens if rain closes tracks inside the park.

What’s the weather like on the route in December and January?
December falls in the short rains: hot and humid in Dar, afternoon thunderstorms inland, and a green Mikumi full of young animals. January and February usually bring a drier spell before the long rains. Rain is heavy but usually brief, and game-viewing tracks on the black-cotton floodplain can close for a while after a downpour. For the detail, read Mikumi in November, Mikumi in January and February, calving season, Mikumi vs Serengeti and the month-by-month timing guide.
Christmas in Dar es Salaam: what else is there to do?
If you are spending the holidays in Dar, pair Mikumi with a beach day, an island trip and a market morning. The city is at its most relaxed over Christmas, when many residents go home upcountry.
- Coco Beach (Oyster Bay): the city’s people-watching beachfront, liveliest on holiday evenings with grilled street food.
- Bongoyo and Mbudya islands: short boat rides from the Slipway and Msasani area for snorkelling, seafood and calm water. Go early, before the afternoon wind.
- The Slipway (Msasani): sunset drinks, crafts and restaurants over the bay.
- Kariakoo market: Dar’s frenetic commercial heart. Go with a local, keep your phone and wallet zipped away, and avoid the pre-Christmas crush.
- National Museum: a good rainy-afternoon option for history, including the hominid fossil displays.
- Kigamboni beaches: cross by ferry or the Nyerere Bridge for quieter south-coast beaches and resort day passes.
- Other weekend escapes: Saadani, where the bush meets the beach (see Mikumi vs Saadani), and Nyerere, formerly Selous (see Mikumi vs Nyerere).
Practical essentials
Do you need Tanzania’s mandatory travel insurance for a Mikumi trip?
Yes, if you are a foreign visitor who is not resident in Tanzania. Since 1 October 2026, mainland Tanzania has required government inbound travel insurance from NIC at a fixed $44 per person, valid for up to 92 days, and Zanzibar has required its ZIC policy since 1 October 2024. You buy only one policy, for your first point of entry. The mainland rule rests on Government Notice No. 256 of 2026, signed on 31 August 2026 and gazetted on 4 September 2026.
- Arriving in Dar (or elsewhere on the mainland) first: buy NIC cover. It stays valid if you go on to Zanzibar.
- Arriving in Zanzibar first: your ZIC policy also covers a ferry-and-SGR trip to Mikumi, and NIC says you don’t need to buy again.
- Residents are exempt, and NIC lists residents of EAC and SADC partner states as exempt from the mainland requirement.
- Enforcement is new. Early reports vary on how and where certificates are checked (airports, land and sea borders, or visa records). Buy it before you travel through the official NIC portal and keep the certificate on your phone. It doesn’t replace your own travel insurance, which you still want for medical evacuation.
Background: Zanzibar’s mandatory travel insurance.
Health and safety
- Malaria: Dar and Mikumi are both malaria areas, and the December–January rains bring more mosquitoes. Ask a travel clinic about prophylaxis, and use repellent at dawn and dusk, including on the station platform at 05:30. See malaria and yellow fever.
- Safety in Dar: petty theft is the main risk. Use Bolt or Uber instead of street taxis, especially for pre-dawn and late-night station runs, keep phones out of sight at car windows in traffic, and leave valuables behind when you go to Kariakoo.
- On the highway: choose an operator with a well-kept vehicle and a driver who doesn’t race the trucks, and ask for return transfers in daylight or with plenty of margin.
What to pack for a train-and-safari day
- Your passport (the one used for the ticket) and a printed or phone e-ticket
- Light layers: the train’s air-conditioning is cold at 06:00, and the floodplain is hot by noon
- A rain jacket in December and January, and closed shoes
- Binoculars, sunscreen, a hat and insect repellent
- Water and a snack to eat before boarding (train food rules have been strict)
- A power bank, since charging is limited on a 17-hour day
- Some cash in TZS for tips and snacks (park fees are cashless)
The train’s luggage advantage: unlike the 15 kg light-aircraft limit, the train lets you bring a full camera kit, a tripod and a beanbag, and Business (20 kg) and Royal (30 kg) allowances give more room still. Photographers should read our green-season photography guide and the what to pack list.
Tipping
Tipping your driver-guide is customary but up to you. Many travellers budget around $10 to $20 per vehicle for a day, more for an exceptional guide or a two-day trip. Tip in cash at the end, in TZS or clean US dollar notes.

How we checked this guide
We researched this guide in October and November 2026. Train times come from TRC timetables as reported by Daily News (January 2026) and Mwananchi (TRC interview, 4 October 2026), and from TRC’s launch announcements of June and July 2024. Fares come from LATRA’s June 2024 fare order and TRC’s October 2026 statements; we found no newer official fare order. Disruption details come from The Citizen and The Chanzo (28–31 December 2025). Ferry fares come from Azam Marine’s own fare page. Flight information comes from Safari Air Link and Coastal Aviation’s published schedule. Park fees come from TANAPA’s published tariff. Insurance details come from NIC and summaries of Government Notice No. 256 of 2026. Tour prices and ratings are live “from” figures on GetYourGuide, Viator, Tripadvisor and SafariBookings. Where sources disagree, as on the SGR fare (TZS 13,000 or 13,500), evening train times, resident and EAC park fees and foreign-vehicle fees, we say so.
