Hotel Pickups for a Mikumi Day Safari: What Time by Area
How far your Zanzibar hotel is from the airport sets your pickup time for a Mikumi day safari, from Stone Town's later starts to the pre-dawn pickups in Nungwi and on the east coast.

The flight to Mikumi leaves early, and the rest of a Mikumi day trip is timed backwards from it. Your pickup time comes down almost entirely to one thing: how far your hotel is from Zanzibar’s airport. Someone staying in Stone Town and someone staying in Nungwi are on the same flight, but their mornings start about an hour apart.
Here is how it breaks down by area, so you know what you are signing up for before you book.

Why your hotel changes your wake-up time
The morning flight leaves Abeid Amani Karume International Airport at a fixed time, somewhere between 07:00 and 07:45 depending on the operator. You need to be there in good time to check in, and your pickup is worked back from that, plus the drive from your hotel. Zanzibar is bigger than it looks on a map, and the roads are slow, so the far corners of the island are a real journey from the airport just outside Stone Town.
So the further you are from the airport, the earlier your pickup. The plane will not wait.
Pickup times by area
The drive times below are typical transfer times to the airport. The pickup times are estimates worked back from them and from what the operators publish: one operator collects at 05:00 from anywhere on the island for a 07:15 flight, and the twin-engine day safari usually picks up around 06:00 for a 07:00 flight. The operator confirms your exact time the evening before, so treat the last column as a guide to the pattern.
| Where you are staying | Drive to the airport | Likely pickup |
|---|---|---|
| Stone Town and nearby | About 15–20 minutes | Latest of all, often around 06:00 |
| Central island and the southwest | Under an hour | Around 05:30 |
| Paje, Jambiani, Bwejuu, Michamvi | About 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes | Around 05:00, sometimes before |
| Kiwengwa, Matemwe and the northeast | About 1 hour | Around 05:00 |
| Nungwi and Kendwa | About 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 15 minutes | Earliest, around 04:30 to 05:00 |
Stone Town and nearby (latest pickups). In or around Stone Town you are closest to the airport and get the latest, most civilised pickup. If a lie-in matters to you, this is the easiest base to do the trip from, and it is also the one place where skipping the transfer and making your own way to the airport is straightforward.
Central island and the southwest. Areas within a moderate drive of the airport sit in the middle, with pickups typically around 05:30.
East coast (Paje, Jambiani, Bwejuu, Michamvi). The east-coast beaches are a real drive from the airport, about an hour from Paje and a little longer from Jambiani and the Michamvi peninsula, so pickups here run earlier, commonly around 05:00 or before.
Kiwengwa, Matemwe and the northeast. Further up the east coast, Matemwe is about an hour from the airport, and pickups sit around 05:00.
Nungwi and Kendwa (earliest pickups). The far northern tip is the longest transfer on the island, well over an hour to the airport. Pickups here are the earliest of all, often around 04:30 to 05:00. If you are staying in the north, expect a genuinely pre-dawn start.
The same distances apply on the way home. The return flight leaves the airstrip around 15:00, and you are back at your hotel between about 17:00 and 18:30: the earlier end for Stone Town, the later end for the north and east coasts.
Where you stay, and whether to move for a night
If you are still deciding where to stay, or your itinerary is flexible, it helps to know that your base changes this trip noticeably.
From Stone Town the day is long, but the start is manageable. From Nungwi or the far east coast you add more than an hour of pre-dawn transfer at each end: a 04:30 or 05:00 pickup and a correspondingly late return in the evening. That is fine if you are prepared for it, but it matters if you are travelling with children, or if a very early start would spoil the following day as well.
One option some travellers use: if you are set on a northern or east-coast beach but want an easier safari day, spend the night before the trip in or near Stone Town. It turns a very early start into a reasonable one. Whether the extra hotel move is a fair trade is your call, but the option is there.
Is the transfer included?
Usually, but check. Many day-trip listings sell two versions: one with hotel pickup and drop-off, and a cheaper one where you meet the team at the airport. The most-booked Mikumi day safari, From Zanzibar: Mikumi Safari Day Trip with Flights and Lunch, works this way: the transfer option collects you from your hotel, and the other meets you at Jahazi Cafe on the airport grounds. The twin-engine day safari also sells hotel pickup as a separate option, with a meeting point at the domestic terminal otherwise. Before you book, confirm that door-to-door transfer from your specific hotel is included in the option you choose; booking a Mikumi safari lists the other things to confirm before you pay.
If the transfer is not included, you meet the team at the airport and arrange your own early-morning taxi. From Stone Town that is a short ride. From the north or east coast it is a long, pre-dawn drive with few taxis about, which is why the transfer option is the better choice if you are staying far out.
Practical tips for the early start
- Confirm your exact pickup time the night before, ideally by message, so there is no doubt at 04:30. Operators confirm it the evening before as standard.
- Be ready in the lobby a few minutes early. The driver is on a tight schedule tied to the flight, and one operator asks guests to be at reception five minutes before pickup.
- Arrange a breakfast box with your hotel the night before, since you will leave long before the kitchen opens.
- Have your daypack and documents ready the night before, so you are not packing in the dark. Your passport is checked at the domestic terminal.
