A driver collects you from your hotel in the early morning — the further north or east you are staying, the earlier that is — and takes you to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport. The flight to Mikumi leaves around 07:45 and takes well under an hour, crossing the channel and the Uluguru foothills before dropping onto a bush airstrip inside the park.
Game drives start straight off the plane, at about 08:30, in a shared 4x4 with an experienced English-speaking driver-guide. Mikumi's Mkata floodplain is open grass and scattered acacia, which is exactly why it works as a one-day park: elephant, Masai giraffe, zebra, impala, buffalo, warthog and hippo pools are visible from a long way off, and lion are a realistic rather than guaranteed sighting.
Lunch is served in the bush around 13:00 with fresh juices, then the drive continues until roughly 14:30. The return flight leaves near 15:00 and puts you back at your hotel between about 17:00 and 18:30, depending where on the island you are staying.
