The overland alternative to flying, and a genuinely different trip rather than a cheaper version of the same one. Nothing about it is rushed: you get a full day of game drives instead of a few hours, two nights in a lodge, and you see the mainland between Dar es Salaam and Morogoro at ground level.
Day one starts with an early hotel pickup and the 07:00 ferry to Dar es Salaam, arriving around 08:40. From there it is the 09:30 high-speed SGR train to Morogoro, in by 11:15, then a road transfer to Mikumi. Lunch is at the lodge, and at 16:30 you visit a Maasai village.
Day two is the reason you came: a full day of game driving in Mikumi, starting after an early breakfast. A whole day in the park changes the odds considerably compared with a fly-in day trip — the guide can work the floodplain in the early light, rest through the midday heat, and go back out when the animals move again.
Day three returns you to Zanzibar by the same chain of train, ferry and road. Guests are candid in reviews that the transfers are long — roughly 1.5 hours by boat, 1.5 by train and 2 to 2.5 by car each way — and equally consistent that it is worth it.
