How to Fit a Mikumi Safari Into a 7, 10 or 14-Night Zanzibar Holiday

Day-by-day Zanzibar and Mikumi safari itineraries for 7, 10 and 14 nights: which day to book the safari, pickup times by beach, November to February tips and a budget checked in October 2026.

Updated October 2026

Book the Mikumi day safari for day 3 or 4 of a 7-night Zanzibar holiday: you are over the jet lag, and there is still time to rebook if the flight is cancelled. On 10 nights, take a two-day overnight on days 3 and 4. On 14 nights, go early (days 3 to 5) and add a second wildlife or ocean trip later. Never book it for the day after a long-haul arrival, the morning after New Year’s Eve, within 18 to 24 hours of scuba diving, or within two nights of your flight home.

Most people fit in the shared fly-in day trip, so check your date in the booking box below: From Zanzibar: Mikumi Safari Day Trip with Flights and Lunch costs from $430 per person, is rated 4.7 out of 5 from 3,197 reviews, and includes both flights, park fees and lunch.

In short, for November 2026 to February 2027:

  • Base: a night in Stone Town before safari day gives you the latest pickup (15 to 20 minutes to the airport). From Nungwi or Kendwa, about 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 15 minutes away, expect a pickup around 04:30 to 05:00.
  • Cost: a shared fly-in day trip from $430 per person on GetYourGuide or $500 on Viator; smaller-vehicle versions from $525; operators’ two-day fly-ins about $850 to $1,000.
  • Extras: a $50 visa ($100 for US citizens), $44 inbound insurance (one policy, bought for your first port of entry) and Zanzibar’s hotel infrastructure tax, $2 to $5 per person per night depending on the hotel’s star rating.

Which day should I do my Mikumi safari from Zanzibar?

The third or fourth full day of your trip, ideally straight after a night in Stone Town, and never the day after you land or in your last two nights. Mikumi flights use small aircraft, and operators can cancel or delay them for weather or technical reasons. One Tripadvisor reviewer, for example, was collected at 5 a.m. only to learn at 10 a.m. that the plane was faulty. Going early in the trip leaves spare days to rebook.

RuleWhyWhat to do instead
Not the day after a long-haul arrivalPickups run from about 04:30 to 06:00, and many flights from Europe and the Gulf land late at nightGive yourself at least one full beach day first
Not within two nights of your international flightA cancelled or postponed small-aircraft flight needs a spare dayDo the safari in the first half of your trip, and be back on Zanzibar at least two nights before you fly home
Not within 18 to 24 hours of scuba divingDivers Alert Network’s “Flying After Diving” guidelines, based on 802 trials, set minimum surface intervals before flying of 12 hours after a single no-decompression dive and 18 hours after multiple dives per day or multiple days of diving. NAUI says 24 hours. Small safari planes are unpressurised, and DAN Europe treats an altitude gain of more than about 700 m after diving as carrying the same risk as flyingPut a non-diving day between your last dive and safari day. Snorkelling is fine
Not 1 JanuaryA 04:30 alarm after a New Year’s Eve gala dinner helps nobody, and transfers are short-staffed28 to 30 December or 2 to 4 January work better
Yes: after a night in Stone TownIt cuts the airport transfer to 15 to 20 minutesBook Stone Town for the night before and go to the beach afterwards
Yes: on a day with a poor tideOn the east coast, a midday low tide means a stretch with no swimming anywayCheck the tide table for your beach

The simplest pattern works for 7, 10 or 14 nights: arrive, have a beach day, spend a night in Stone Town, do the safari, then stay on the beach for the rest of the trip. See weather cancellations for what operators do if your flight cannot go.

What time is pickup for the Mikumi day trip, and when will I be back?

Expect a pickup between about 04:30 and 06:00 depending on your beach, a take-off from Zanzibar airport (ZNZ) between 07:00 and 07:45, and a drop-off back at your hotel between about 17:00 and 18:30. Operators’ published schedules vary. One Viator and Tripadvisor listing leaves ZNZ at 07:00, lands at Mikumi at 08:00 and leaves for home around 15:30. A GetYourGuide listing quotes a 05:00 hotel pickup, a 07:00 departure, a 07:45 arrival and a departure from Mikumi around 15:45.

Recent reviews add two notes. An August 2026 traveller had a 4 a.m. pickup in Nungwi, and an October 2026 traveller stood around at the airport “for almost 1.5 hours” because the pickup was set too early. Ask your operator for your flight time and work backwards from it. The flight itself takes 45 to 60 minutes each way, depending on the aircraft and routing. For the full day, see our hour-by-hour Mikumi day trip itinerary and the pickup times by area.

If you would rather fly in a smaller group, the Mikumi Day Safari by Twin-Engine Plane from Zanzibar costs from $525 (4.7 out of 5 from 160 reviews), and the 1-Day Mikumi National Park Fly-In Safari from Zanzibar on Viator from $500 (4.95 out of 5 from 417 reviews).

Where should I stay in Zanzibar for a safari holiday?

Stay on the north coast (Nungwi or Kendwa) if swimming at any hour matters most, on the east and south-east coast (Paje, Jambiani, Michamvi) for kitesurfing, value and a social scene, and in Stone Town for a night or two before your safari. The tide makes the difference. The east and south-east coasts sit on a broad, shallow shelf where the sea can pull back hundreds of metres, sometimes around a kilometre, at low tide. Nungwi and Kendwa are barely affected.

On the east coast, plan swims around high tide and use low tide for long sandbank walks, rock pools and watching the seaweed farmers. Ask your hotel for the usual swim window on your dates. For Mikumi’s own seasons, see Mikumi in November and Mikumi in January and February.

What’s a good 7-night Zanzibar itinerary with a safari?

Two nights in Stone Town, then five on one beach, with the Mikumi day trip on day 3 straight from Stone Town. You get the shortest pickup, a recovery day first, and four buffer nights before you fly home. This is our pick for first-timers.

DayPlanNight
1Land at ZNZ. Transfer (15–20 minutes) and an evening stroll to the Forodhani Gardens food marketStone Town
2Stone Town walking tour in the morning. Afternoon boat to Prison Island (giant tortoises) and Nakupenda sandbank, or a spice farm tourStone Town
3Mikumi day safari (pickup around 06:00, back about 17:00). Transfer to the beach that evening (about 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes), or stay a third night in Stone TownBeach
4A day off: swim, sleep, sundownerBeach
5Mnemba Atoll snorkelling (from the north or north-east) or Safari Blue in Menai Bay (from the south)Beach
6Jozani Forest (red colobus monkeys) and a swim at Salaam or Kuza Cave, or a sunset dhow cruiseBeach
7Free beach day. Dinner at The Rock (book a slot that suits the tide)Beach
8Transfer to the airport and depart—

Variation for divers: dive on days 5 and 6, after the safari, and leave at least 24 hours between your last dive and your flight home.

Variation for Christmas: put the safari on 28 to 30 December. Many resorts set four- or five-night festive minimum stays, so put the Stone Town nights before 23 December or after 2 January where you can (see Christmas and New Year in Mikumi).

What does a 10-day Zanzibar and safari trip look like?

Ten nights leaves room for a two-day, one-night Mikumi fly-in. A night in the park gets you the late-afternoon and dawn game drives, when cats are most active. Book it for days 3 and 4, then split the rest between two contrasting beaches. This is our pick for couples and honeymooners.

Two-day fly-ins are mostly sold direct by operators: in October 2026 the two-day fly-in listings on GetYourGuide had four reviews or fewer. Our guide to where to stay overnight in Mikumi compares the camps and lists what operators charge. If you would rather book a rated trip with nights in the park area, the Zanzibar to Mikumi: 3-Day Safari with Maasai Village Visit goes overland by ferry and train, from $570 with two lodge nights (4.97 out of 5, though from only 26 reviews). Still deciding? See one day vs two days in Mikumi.

How do I plan a 2-week Zanzibar itinerary with a safari?

On 14 nights you can do Mikumi early and still have room for one bigger add-on: Ndutu for the calving season (late January to February), Ruaha or Nyerere for a wilder southern safari, or Mafia Island for whale sharks. Do the mainland trip in the first half and keep the last three nights on the beach.

DayPlanNight

3–4Mikumi two-day fly-in (or a day trip on day 3)Mikumi or Stone Town
5–8East coast: Jozani, caves, kitesurfing, Safari BluePaje, Jambiani or Michamvi
9–11Add-on (choose one): Mafia Island whale sharks, a Ndutu calving fly-in (see calving: Mikumi vs Serengeti), Ruaha or Nyerere (see Mikumi vs Ruaha and Mikumi vs Nyerere), or simply more beachMainland, Mafia or beach
12–14North coast: Mnemba snorkelling, a dhow sunset, a full-moon night at Kendwa if the dates line upNungwi or Kendwa
15Depart (book Mafia or mainland flights back to Zanzibar for day 11 at the latest)—

Mafia whale sharks: sightings centre on Kilindoni Bay. Operators quote a season of October to February or March, and most agree November to February is the most reliable. A local snorkel trip costs about $60 (some charge up to $120). Mafia is a short light-aircraft hop from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar, but check schedules, because routings vary.

Ndutu: the calving fly-in costs several times a Mikumi trip and is best from mid-January to February. For that, the 3 Days Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater Fly in Safari starts and ends in Zanzibar, from $2,303 per person (4.98 out of 5 from 41 reviews); ask the operator in writing to base you on the southern plains. Our full comparison is in calving: Mikumi vs Serengeti. If you want a beach-and-bush park on the mainland coast instead, see Mikumi vs Saadani.

What’s on in Zanzibar from November to February?

November and early December bring the short rains, mostly brief showers. The festive peak runs roughly from 20 December to 6 January. January and February are hot, bright and calm, and Ramadan is expected to start around 8 February 2027. For Mikumi month by month, see our best time for a Mikumi safari guide.

WhenWhat happensWhat it means for your itinerary
November to mid-DecemberShort rains (vuli). Climate sources give anywhere from about 115 mm to 220 mm for November, usually in short bursts. Sea about 28–29°CCheaper rates (Zuri Zanzibar ran a 20%-off November 2026 offer, for example). Mikumi is green; see Mikumi in November
About 20 December to 6 JanuaryFestive peak. Many resorts set four- or five-night minimums: Kisiwa on the Beach four nights (20 December to 10 January); Baraza, The Palms and Zawadi five nights. Compulsory gala supplements (Hotel Verde: $65 per adult on 24 and 31 December)Book six to nine months ahead. Safari on 28–30 December or 2–4 January
Mid-December to mid-MarchKaskazi (north-east) monsoon, about 12–20 knots. Kitesurf season in Paje and Jambiani. Hot, mostly dry, calmer seas on the west and southThe best window for beginner kitesurfers. Boat trips generally run well

Which Zanzibar excursions pair best with a Mikumi safari?

One culture day (Stone Town and Prison Island), one ocean day (Mnemba or Safari Blue) and one nature day (Jozani). That gives you history, sea and forest without over-scheduling a beach holiday. Prices below are October 2026 listings and vary with pickup area, group size and inclusions.

ExcursionTypical price per personNovember–February noteOur take
Stone Town walking tour (with a spice farm and Prison Island combination)From about $55 for a combination tourHot by midday, so go earlyEssential on day 1 or 2

We don’t recommend the swim-with-dolphins boats at Kizimkazi. A peer-reviewed study of this population (Christiansen, Lusseau, Stensland and Berggren, Endangered Species Research 11:91–99, 2010) found that “foraging, resting and socialising all decreased as an effect of tourist boat presence, while travelling increased.” A 2016 study found signs of the dolphins moving away from the main tourism area during the day, and recent reviews describe “around 20 boats all chasing the same pod”. If you want dolphins, watch from a boat that stays back and runs parallel to the pod, or choose Mnemba or Safari Blue, where dolphins are a bonus and not the target.

How much does a Zanzibar and Mikumi safari holiday cost?

Excluding international flights, a mid-range couple should budget roughly $1,550 to $2,400 per person for 7 nights with a shared Mikumi day trip, $2,400 to $3,400 for 10 nights with a two-day fly-in, and $3,000 to $4,300 for 14 nights before any big add-on. Hotels make the biggest difference.

US citizens should add $50 for the visa. Over the festive dates, hotel lines can double, and gala dinners add more. Guesthouses at $25 to $70 per room per night cut the hotel line by more than half.

What do I need to know about visas, insurance, flights and luggage?

Get your e-visa and the $44 inbound insurance before you fly, buying the policy for the place you land first. Pack a 15 kg soft bag for the safari plane, and bring US dollar notes printed in 2009 or later.

Insurance and the first-port-of-entry rule. From 1 October 2026, mainland Tanzania requires government inbound travel insurance from NIC. According to the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators, the rule comes from Government Notice No. 256 of 2026, dated 4 September 2026 and made under section 134A of the Insurance Act; “the premium has been set at USD 44 per visitor”, valid for up to 92 days. Children aged 3 to 17 reportedly pay $22 and under-3s are free. That sits alongside Zanzibar’s ZIC scheme, which has run since 1 October 2024. You buy once, for your first port of entry. Tanzaniatourism.uk puts it this way: “only one or the other needs to be purchased, determined by the passenger’s first port of entry”. Fly into ZNZ and you buy ZIC; fly into Dar es Salaam, or catch the ferry from Dar, and you buy NIC. A few blogs written before launch said you would need both; the official position since launch is one policy. Carry your certificate, because the Mikumi airstrip counts as mainland. More in our Zanzibar travel insurance guide.

Flights into Zanzibar this season (November 2026 to February 2027). One-stop routes go via Doha (Qatar Airways), Dubai (flydubai and Emirates), Istanbul (Turkish), Addis Ababa (Ethiopian), Nairobi (Kenya Airways) and Muscat (Oman Air). Non-stops from Europe include Condor from Frankfurt (year-round, about three a week), Edelweiss from Zurich (seasonal to March 2027) and Neos and World2Fly charters from Italy and Spain. EgyptAir’s Cairo service increases to three a week from 16 December 2026. There is no UK non-stop this winter: TUI’s Gatwick–Zanzibar flights start on 3 November 2027 and British Airways’ in summer 2027. There is no US non-stop either.

Arriving in Dar es Salaam instead of ZNZ. The fast ferry to Zanzibar takes about 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes. Azam Marine’s published non-resident fares are $35 economy, $60 VIP and $100 royal class. Remember that you buy NIC insurance, not ZIC. If you want to reach Mikumi by train, see flying vs driving from Zanzibar and Mikumi by ferry and road.

Yellow fever. You need a certificate if you are over 1 year old and arriving from, or have transited for more than 12 hours through an airport in, a yellow-fever-risk country. Ethiopia and Kenya both count, so a long layover in Addis Ababa or Nairobi triggers it (UK TravelHealthPro, Tanzania page).

Malaria. Both Zanzibar and Mikumi are malaria areas, so talk to a travel clinic about tablets. See our malaria and yellow fever guide.

Luggage for the safari plane. Allowances vary by airline: Coastal Aviation 15 kg including hand luggage (soft bags “strongly recommended”), Auric Air 20 kg, Flightlink 20 kg checked plus 5 kg in the cabin. You won’t always know which airline your operator uses, so pack for 15 kg in a soft duffel and leave your suitcase with your Zanzibar hotel. Most hotels store bags free for returning guests, but confirm when you book. See what to pack.

Money and connectivity. Bring US dollar notes printed in 2009 or later, because older notes are often refused. There are ATMs in Stone Town and the main beach areas. A local SIM or eSIM works on most of the island, but expect a patchy signal in the park. For the park itself, see Mikumi National Park explained.

FAQ

Which day should I book my Zanzibar safari day trip? Day 3 or 4 of your trip, ideally after a night in Stone Town. Avoid the day after you land, the morning after New Year’s Eve, the 18 to 24 hours after diving, and your last two nights.

Can I do Zanzibar and a safari in 7 days? Yes. A fly-in Mikumi day trip takes one day, leaving six nights for the island. Book it for day 3.

Is 10 days enough for Zanzibar and a safari? Yes. It leaves room for a two-day, one-night Mikumi fly-in plus two different beaches.

How early is pickup for a Mikumi day trip from Nungwi? Usually 04:30 to 05:00. Nungwi is about 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 15 minutes from the airport. Stone Town pickups are around 06:00.

Can I fly to Mikumi the day after scuba diving? Only if you have met the minimum surface interval in Divers Alert Network’s “Flying After Diving” guidelines: 12 hours after a single no-decompression dive, 18 hours after multiple dives per day or multiple days of diving. Small safari planes are unpressurised, so we recommend a full non-diving day in between.

Is December good for a beach and safari holiday? Yes. Showers ease through December, and Christmas to New Year is peak season with minimum stays. Book early and put the safari on 28 to 30 December.

Do I need two insurance policies for Zanzibar and Mikumi? No. Since 1 October 2026 you buy one $44 policy for your first port of entry (ZIC for Zanzibar, NIC for the mainland), and it covers both.

Can I bring a suitcase on the Mikumi flight? Pack light. Allowances run from 15 kg (Coastal Aviation) to 20 kg (Auric Air, Flightlink), so a 15 kg soft bag is safest. Leave your suitcase at your hotel.

Is Ramadan a problem for a February trip? No, but expect cafés outside hotels to close by day from about 8 February 2027. Eat inside your resort and dress modestly in towns.

What’s the best beach to stay on for swimming in Zanzibar? Nungwi or Kendwa on the north coast. The east coast (Paje, Jambiani) has a big tidal range, so swim around high tide there.

How we checked this guide

In October 2026 we checked live listings for Mikumi day and overnight trips on GetYourGuide, Viator, Tripadvisor and SafariBookings, plus operators’ own websites. Pickup and drive times follow our pickup guide. Excursion prices come from current listings and the official Safari Blue price. Visa, insurance and tax rules were checked against Tanzanian Government Notice No. 256 of 2026 as reported by TanzaniaInvest and the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators, the Zanzibar Revenue Authority’s infrastructure-tax tiers, and visa-fee guides. Diving advice follows Divers Alert Network (DAN) and DAN Europe; health rules follow UK TravelHealthPro. Weather figures are ranges because climate sources disagree (November rainfall estimates run from about 115 mm to more than 200 mm). Ramadan dates are astronomical forecasts, and festival dates come from Busara Promotions. Where sources conflicted, as on the Jozani fee, US visa on arrival and light-aircraft baggage limits, we say so. The beach-area links go to Booking.com through Stay22, and we earn a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you. Prices change, so confirm them when you book.
